Lupita, who has become a firm fashion favourite over award season, said she chose the gown as it reminded her of her native Kenya.
'This is Prada and it was made for me,' she told E!'s Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre. 'It's a blue that reminds me of Nairobi.'
