37 defected PDP House of Reps members to resign, federal high court orders

37 PDP House of Representatives members who defected to APC in December 2013 have been ordered to vacate their seats and the House by federal high court Abuja.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola gave the order today while delivering judgment in a suit filed against the defected lawmakers by the PDP. The judge said the lawmakers no longer had any business, morally and legally in the Assembly and so should resign.

Heavy Gunfire Going on Around Aso Rock, Abuja.

"We don't know what is going on, everybody is running, it seems there is war in this area", these are the words of a resident of the Aso Drive area in Abuja.

There have been heavy gunfire exchanges around the vicinity of Nigeria’s Aso Rock presidential Villa and the headquarters of the State State Services, SSS, in the Asokoro District of Abuja in the past one hour, security sources and residents of the area said.

A 23-year-old Youngest gay bride joins dozens of couples across the country on the first day same sex marriage is legal in Britain

A 23-year-old bride has become the youngest married lesbian after tying the knot with her fiancée on the first day of legalised gay marriage.

Sarah-Louise Billington exchanged vows with Rebecca Green, 31, in a ceremony at Dudley Register Office this morning.

Both wore white wedding gowns to mark the occasion just hours after the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act came into effect.

They joined couples across Britain celebrating the law, passed in July and brought into force today, 13 years after the Netherlands, and four years after Argentina, a Catholic country.

Two Britons, others arrested by Nigerian security agency for crude oil theft and bribery.

Source:The Joint Task Force, JTF, in the Niger Delta, on Friday announced that its officials declined a N20 million gratification offered by a syndicate to facilitate oil theft. The members of the syndicate, including two Britons, were also arrested.The Commander of the JTF, Emmanuel Atewe, who paraded the suspects before journalists in Yenagoa, said that the suspects were arrested shortly after offering $66,500 (N10.6 million) being part payment of the N20 million bribe pledge.

American president, once the international superstar of the political stage meets the pope who has been praised for his humility and outlook on the world.

So it is no surprise that President Barack Obama has travelled to the Vatican in Rome possibly to get some tips from the popular Pope Francis who now even has own weekly glossy magazine. 

But his hopes of learning a thing or two from the 'Francis effect' may have been dashed after both parties released very different statements about their first meeting this morning. 

Obama stressed their common ground over issues of poverty and inequality while Vatican officials emphasised sharp differences over abortion and birth control.

Lagos Attorney-General insists Toll collection on Lekki-Bridge

 

A Federal High court this morning nullified collection of toll on the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge after a human rights lawyer, Ebun Adegboruwa, filed a lawsuit. But despite that ruling, the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye says toll collection on the bridge will continue.

The State Attorney General said this today a few hours after the Federal High court rulling 

"The judgment read this morning did not specifically address many of the questions raised by the applicant, neither did it grant any of the declarations sought. So the road users will continue to pay. All the same, we are not ruling out any kind of interpretation”. Aside from the failure of the court to make any consequential order or declaration, the judgment contains at least two or three fundamental errors. And one of the errors is the assumption that the Private Public Partnerships Law of Lagos State, which we cited in support of toll collection, did not apply, simply because the bridge was not constructed by public-private partnership”. Ipaye said

The Attorney-General also revealed that the Lagos State Government plan to appeal the judgement and file an application for stay of execution.

Policeman rapes four-year old in Jos

A riot policeman attached to the Special Task Force was on Wednesday  arrested for raping a four-year old girl in Jos, Plateau State.

The girl, identified simply as Helen, was allegedly raped by the policeman, said to be a 32-year corporal, serving under STF at Rapum in Kassa, Barakin Ladi Local Government Area.

Malaysian missing Flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean, the Malaysian Prime Minister has announced. None of those on board survived'

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 vanished from civilian radar screens less than an hour after take-off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing with 239 people on board on March 8.

No confirmed sighting of the plane has been made since, but much debris has been found in remote waters off Australia which might be part of the missing plane. 

Malaysian Prime Minister said all lives were lost and relatives of passengers and crew have been informed of the 'heartbreaking' news. Some families of the passengers on the missing plane are now due to be booked on to flights to take them to Australia, where the plane is believed to have ended up.
