Shereka Marsh, a student at Urswick School in Hackney, was attacked in a house in Hackney Wick just before 4pm yesterday.
Tragic: Shereka Marsh has been named by police as the victim of the shooting in Hackney Wick, London
Source: Three boys, two aged 16 and one aged 15, were arrested on suspicion of murder. They have been taken into custody and are being questioned by detectives at an east London police station.
Police have said the house Shereka was shot in was not her home address, and that a firearm had been recovered from the property.
Miss Marsh, who has been formally identified as the victim by police, may have been accidentally shot in the neck by her friend, according to posts on Facebook and Twitter.
Shocked friends and neighbours gathered in the street where Shereka died this afternoon to lay floral tributes in honour of the popular schoolgirl.
Dozens more took to social-networking sites to pay tribute to Miss Marsh - with a Facebook group, 'RIP Shereka', set up in memory of the teenager.

However, police are yet to formally identify the three men in custody.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: 'Officers attended the scene, together with London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance (HEMS).
'The 15-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
