New York City's East Village catches fire and collapses after massive explosion


Source: At least 12 people have been injured - four critically - after a five-story building collapsed and surrounding structures caught alight following an apparent gas explosion in New York City's East Village on Thursday afternoon.

Flames ravaged buildings on Second Avenue and 7th Street following the explosion at 3.15pm - about an hour after Con Edison workers had been at the building to look into upgrading the gas service.

The site of the blast, 121 Second Avenue, caught alight, while its neighboring building, 123 Second Avenue, completely collapsed - leaving a massive hole on the block. A fire is also raging at 119 Second Avenue and thick gray smoke continues to billow across the sky, while debris can be seen strewn in the street.
