A jilted boyfriend blasted his ex-girlfriend and two others to death with a shotgun before turning the gun on himself in a New Year's massacre today.
The horrific bloodbath took place at a terraced house in Sainte-Catherine, close to Arras, in northern France, where a group of seven people had gathered to see in 2015.
The man, understood to be a community nurse aged 45, turned up at around 1am saying he wanted to speak to his ex-girlfriend.
"He's been invited, but arrived in the quiet residential area with a gun," said local prosecutor Adam Chodkiewiez.
"He immediately attacked his ex-girlfriend. Two people tried to intervene, and that’s when the gunfire started."
Three people – the ex-girlfriend and two men in their 50s – were killed, while two others were injured, one seriously.
The 'severely injured man' is currently in intensive care in a hospital in nearby Lille, said Mr Chodkiewiez.
Two others managed to escape, and were treated for severe shock and 'minor injuries' by emergency workers who arrived on the scene.
