EFCC probes 100 pro-Jonathan groups over N320m

Punch: The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has traced N320m to the account of the Goodluck Support Group, a collation of campaign groups, driving former President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid for the 2015 presidential poll.

The group, which coordinated over 100 pro-Jonathan groups during the electioneering, was headed by Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Prof. Rufai Alkali.

The money, it was learnt, emanated from the account of the Central Bank of Nigeria and was distributed to the group.

A source at the EFCC, who pleaded not to be named because he was not authorised to speak, said the money emanated from the CBN’s account and went into the account of the Ministry of External Affairs Library, from where it was moved into the account of the Joint Trust Dimension Nigeria Limited.

Police arrest man for stealing seven-month-old baby

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspected child kidnapper, Happiness Umah, for allegedly stealing a seven-month-old child, Favour, in the Ijora area of the state.

It was learnt that Umah was escaping with the child when he was intercepted by officials of the Rapid Response Squad, who queried him on where he got the child.

He was alleged to have initially lied that he was her father, before saying he picked her from a bush where she was crying.

Abducted colonel found dead in Kaduna

A Senior Nigerian Army Officer, Col. Samaila Inusa, who was reportedly abducted at gunpoint at  the Refinery Junction in Chikun Local Government of Kaduna State was  found dead on Tuesday.

The Nigerian Army authority told newsmen in a statement that Inusa’s body was found in Kaduna. He was suspected that he was killed the same day he was abducted.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman, “Preliminary investigation revealed that most likely the late senior officer was killed the same day he was kidnapped by his abductors. This is because the body was found already decomposing  around  Ajyaita village off Eastern Bypass Kaduna, Kaduna State.

A Senior Army Officer, Col. Samaila Inusa, was on Saturday reportedly kidnapped around the Kamazo area in Chikun Local Government of Kaduna State by yet-to-be identified gunmen.

The Army officer, who was said to be serving with the Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Jaji, near Kaduna was in the company of his wife when the incident occurred.

The kidnappers, it was gathered, dropped off the wife and left with the senior military officer and headed towards Abuja.

No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction of the senior military officer or placed a ransom on him as of the time of filing this report.

Asad Shah, 40, was stabbed to death in his shop in what is feared to have been a sectarian attack against the peace-loving branch of Islam he followed.

Hours before his murder, he had written on Facebook: 'Good Friday and very Happy Easter, especially to my beloved Christian nation.'

The bearded killer is understood to have travelled from his home in Bradford to Mr Shah's store in Glasgow.

TRAGEDY: In Ebonyi 9 roast to death in petrol tanker fire

Tragedy struck in the evening of yesterday as nine persons were roasted to death  in a petrol tanker fire accident at 135 Junction along the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway.

Daily Sun gathered that the accident involved a petrol tanker lorry and a commercial bus that were driving in the  opposite direction few metres away from Ohaukwu local government headquarters, Ezamgbo.

The tanker was said to have  rammed into an oncoming commercial vehicle and caught fire after it had a burst tyre and lost control. Three persons were burnt beyond recognition, while other six victims died at various points as a result of various degrees of burnt sustained in the inferno.

Customs bans rice import through land borders

AFTER about six months of lifting the ban on importation of rice through the nation’s land border, the Nigeria Customs Service has said it has re-introduced the restriction order on the staple food with effect from March 17, 2016.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali who gave the approval for the reversal of an earlier policy in October 2015, which allowed rice imports through the land borders once appropriate duty and charges were paid, said the service noticed some abuses where Customs officers colluded with criminals to smuggle the commodity.

BREAKING NEWS: Boeing 737 passenger jet crashes killing all 62 passengers and crew in a fireball at a Russian airport.

A FlyDubai Boeing 737-800 has crashed in a fireball while it attempted to land at a Russian airport killing everyone aboard.

Flight FZ981 was carrying 55 passengers and seven crew members from Dubai when it crashed at Rostov-on-Don airport, according to a statement released by FlyDubai. Earlier reports said that 61 people were aboard the flight.

Russia's Emergencies Ministry said in a statement: 'The plane made a second round coming in to land because of bad weather conditions. 

'At landing the tail touched the runway, began to break down and burst into flames. At present, no combustion.'

Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov told media during a press conference that it was scheduled to land at 6.20pm ET, which is 1.20am Moscow time, but crashed at 8.50pm ET, which is 3.50am Moscow time.

Hulk Hogan has won his lawsuit against Gawker.

The wrestler was awarded $115million in damages by a jury in Florida after the website posted a leaked sex video that showed him engaging in intercourse with his best friend's wife. 

The jury awarded Hogan $55million for economic injuries and $60million for emotional distress. 

Hogan broke down in tears in the courtroom as the foreman read the jury's verdict.

Gawker will appeal the case, but under Florida law will have to hand over the monetary damages.   

Gawker founder Nick Denton said outside the courthouse following the verdict; 'Given key evidence and the most important witness were both improperly withheld from this jury, we all knew the appeals court will need to resolve the case.

A 21-year-old United States citizen, Matthew Lane Durham, was brought to justice on Monday.

On that day, a court sentenced him to 40 years in prison for sexually assaulting orphaned children while on a missionary trip in Kenya in 2014.

Durham, who is from Oklahoma, was a volunteer with the Upendo Children’s Home in Nairobi between April and June 2014.

Police arrest Lekki Gardens MD for collapsed building

The Lagos State Police Command says it has arrested the Managing Director of Lekki Gardens, Mr. Richard Nyong, for the collapse of a five-storeyed building under construction on Kushenla Road, Ikate Elegushi, Lagos State, which killed no fewer than 35 persons.

It was learnt that 34-year-old Nyong was apprehended on Thursday.

A former missionary convicted of sexually abusing children at an orphanage in Kenya was sentenced on Monday to 40 years in a US prison.

Housewife bathes husband with hot water for denying her sex

An aggrieved housewife, Awele Nwani, 35, has allegedly bathed her husband, Frank Nwani, with hot water, claiming that her hubby denied her sex for three weeks.

But the victim (husband) dismissed her wife’s claim as untrue, saying his wife had been sleeping around.The mother of six children, now on the run, also alleged that her husband had been having sexual affairs outside and threatened to make life unbearable for him.

He said, “My wife has been sleeping around, hence I stopped sleeping with her for three weeks. It is a taboo in my tribe and she violates the laws.”

Frank stressed that his attempts to stop her illicit affairs outside proved abortive when he took the decision to starve her of sex.

SHOCKING: Teacher beheads proprietor’s granddaughter over unpaid salaries

A teacher in a private school, Edet Umoren, in Esugbo, Itamerin near Ijebu-Ife, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Thursday, allegedly beheaded a 10-year-old pupil, Precious Adedeji.

Adedeji, who was a pupil of Favour Nursery and Primary School, was the granddaughter of the proprietor, Pastor Joseph Olitoye.

It was gathered that Umoren allegedly killed the pupil because Olitoye owed him N8, 000 – the suspect’s salaries for January and February.

The assailant, who was also said to be the treasurer of the school proprietor’s church, was alleged to have seized Adedeji when she and her friend, Patricia, were returning to the school from where they had gone to buy biscuit.Umoren, also severed off the right hand of the 10-year-old girl after seizing and dragging her into a nearby bush, a day after her birthday.

A transgender rapist will serve eight years prison after sexually attacking a 15-year-old girl.

The trial heard that the 34-year-old had met up with the victim and two friends one evening and gone drinking in a garage in Portsmouth which had a sofa and chairs in it.

The victim described how she screamed and shouted at Ayrton, who was 23 at the time, to stop but failed to wake up her friend and her boyfriend who were sleeping nearby.

In a statement read to the court, the victim said: 'I was a young girl when David Ayrton raped me. At the time I didn't trust the police and didn't want to make a statement.

'As the years have passed, I have never forgotten the incident, how he forced himself on me, I was hysterical and I lived in fear all the time.

MTN pays N50bn fine, withdraws suit against FG

Source: OUT of the N1.4 trillion fine imposed on MTN Nigeria by the Federal Government, the telecoms firm has paid N50 billion even as it withdrew its case against government.
The company was sanctioned for its lateness in deactivating 5.1 million subscribers who were not registered properly. The suit was being handled by the Federal High Court, Lagos.
The withdrawal may not be unconnected with the insistence of an appeal by the judge.
The judge had given both parties (MTN and the Nigerian Communications Commission) till March 18, 2016 to settle out of court.
