Yoruba’ll regret voting Buhari – Okunrounmu

A leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Senator Femi Okunrounmu, says the Yoruba will regret voting President Muhammadu Buhari.

Okunrounmu, who was the Chairman of the defunct Presidential Advisory Committee on National Conference, had supported former President Goodluck Jonathan for a second term and asked the Yoruba to vote for him so that he would be able to implement the report of the conference.

However, Buhari received over two million votes from the South-West in the last election, defeating Jonathan in the process.

The young Swazi women's death has reportedly led to calls prompted calls for the cancellation of Monday’s annual event.

The girls who died were among 50 teenagers travelling in a vehicle which struck a car that police escorts had directed to the roadside.

Jonathan, Diezani face probe over $6.9m campaign stages

The ongoing probe of the immediate past administration by President Muhammadu Buhari is to beam its searchlight on the alleged purchase of three mobile stages, costing $6.9m, by former President Goodluck Jonathan and two of his officials, a Presidency source has said.

According to a document, which was obtained from the Presidency on Saturday, the deal, which is now a subject of investigation, was allegedly carried out by Jonathan; his Chief Security Officer, Mr. Gordon Obuah; and former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The fund was said to have been withdrawn from one of the numerous accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Chad executes B'Haram Members

A Nigerian was among 10 members of Boko Haram executed by firing squad on Saturday in Chad, after being found guilty of killing 38 people in the country.

The Nigerian, Mahamat Mustapha, also known as Bana Fanaye, according to Chadian authorities, masterminded the June 15 suicide attacks that struck a school and a police building in N’Djamena, killing 38 people and injuring 101.

17 year old boy charged with raping a 9year old family friend since she was 3yr

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with raping a nine-year-old family friend at a state fair.

Jonathan Fleming was arrested at the Maryland State Fairgrounds after the victim's father became concerned when he saw the pair together.

An investigation by the Crimes Against Children Unit alleges that Fleming has been sexually abusing the girl since she was about 3 years old.

AIR CRASH : NAF aircraft crashes in Kaduna, kills seven

A Donnier 228 helicopter belonging to the Nigerian Air Force crashed at the old Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, on Saturday.

It was gathered that the aircraft, with call sign NAF030, which took off from the NAF base in Kaduna, was heading for Abuja when it came down in the early hours of the day.

It was learnt that the aircraft crashed into the Officers’ Quarters at the Ribadu Military Cantonment in Kaduna, igniting fears that the casualty figure might be high.

A 65-year-old landlord, in Akowonjo area of Lagos, Mr. Ganiyu Sani, has allegedly raped a seven-year-old girl, Blessing. But this time, the parents of the victim believe he did it for ritual purposes.

The civil servant mother of the victim told our correspondent that on Monday, August 17, 2015, when she got back from work and was having dinner with her children, Blessings started to touch her crotch and complain of pain.

“I felt the part she was touching and asked what was wrong with her. I thought she was referring to her lower abdomen and believed it must be stomach ache. But she insisted that it was her private part.

“I asked if she fell down and hurt herself but she simply shook her head. I asked if someone hit her there while she was playing with other children in the neighbourhood, she said no. I started suspecting there was something bigger than what she was telling me.

Body of woman, 25, is STOLEN in broad daylight from casket at funeral home just hours after her memorial service.

A grieving family is seeking closure after someone stole their petite daughter's body out of her casket at a Texas funeral home before she could be cremated following her funeral service.

Julie Mott died earlier this month from cystic fibrosis and the 25-year-old's body was stolen after her funeral service last Saturday at the Mission Park North Funeral Chapel in San Antonio.

The funeral was held on what would have been the young woman's 26th birthday.

The Catholic community in Lagos is yet to come to terms with the tragic death of Rev. Francis Alex Okafor. The man drowned during a send-forth party organised in his honour at the Ibeshe Beach in Oriade Lo­cal Council Development Area of the state. Eyewitness account said, while Rev. Okafor and some of his guests were swimming, a strong current came and carried him, together with some of the people.

Divers who were immediately mo­bilised were able to rescue three of them, while Rev Okafor could not be found. Two days after, his lifeless body was found floating at the edge of the sea.

ISIS: Buhari suspends Immigration boss

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday ordered the suspension of the Comptroller-General of Immigration, David Parradang with immediate effect.

PUNCH learnt that Parradang’s suspension might not be unconnected with the ongoing investigations into how a Lebanese terrorist, Ahmed Al Assir was given a Nigerian visa by the Nigerian embassy in Beirut, Lebanon.

Parradang was directed to hand over to the most senior officer, DCG, Martin Kure Abeshi, who had been ordered to take over the affairs of the service, according to a statement by the Director of Press, Ministry of Interior, Alhaji Yusuf Isiaka.

Students 'hacked boy with machete before burying him alive and having sex on grave'

Four students hacked a teenage boy with a machete and buried him alive before two attackers had sex near his shallow grave, police said.

The group plotted the gruesome murder of Jose Amaya Guardado for two weeks, digging the grave and hiding the machete in woods near their Florida university campus, arrest records obtained by the Miami Herald show.

Kaheem Arbelo, 20, Jonathan Lucas, 18, and Christian Colon, 19, were arrested and confessed to the crime last week, the police said.

A fourth suspect, Desiray Strickland, 18, was arrested and charged on Wednesday.

The students are believed to have lured Guardado to woods near the Homestead Job Corps campus, where all five lived around 35 miles south of Miami.

A 22-year-old man simply identified as Emmanuel, reportedly went to ease himself in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving his father and sister inside their one-room apartment. A Syrian man witnessed his own funeral after pulling himself out from a mountain of rubble where he had survived for 36 hours. 

It was believed that Mohammed Rayhan was among 117 people who had died when government forces shelled the market place in Douma, just over six miles north east of Damascus. His family had given up all hope when he failed to return home and started mourning Mr Rayhan’s death. 

Jealous lover sets woman, rival, three kids ablaze

Residents of Ajumose, Ogbein area of Ede in Osun State were woken up by the screams of three children, their mother and her lover, who were engulfed by fire on Sunday, August 16.

It was gathered that the victims were set ablaze by a man, who allegedly felt scorned that his lover was also dating another man.

The five victims were said to be the suspect’s rival, Munirudeen Lawal; the lover, Hadijat Adegoke, and her three children.

Lawal and Adegoke were said to have been rushed to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, as a result of the burns they suffered.

Sources at the hospital disclosed that Lawal died on Tuesday while Hadijat died on Wednesday.

A 42-year-old woman, Mrs. Doris Oseni, has told a Customary Court in Ondo town, Ondo State, that she caught her husband of 12 years, Prophet Femi Oseni, on the floor of the church office, having sex with another woman.

The woman, who is also an evangelist in the church, therefore asked the court for the dissolution of their marriage on the grounds of adultery, desertion and lack of love on the part of the husband.

Nelson Mandela's grandson has been charged with raping a 15-year-old in a toilet in South Africa.

Mbuso Mandela, 24, appeared at a Johannesburg court yesterday and will be held in police custody until he returns for a bail hearing on Friday, a police spokesperson said. 

He allegedly grabbed her as she entered a toilet at an unnamed restaurant in Greenside on Friday. 

The girl who was allegedly raped by Mbuso Mandela went to the restaurant with friends, South Africa's Daily Sun quoted her family's spokesman as saying.

He added: 'Apparently, she went to the toilet and he grabbed her and raped her inside one of the toilets.'

FG monitors Nigerians’ Facebook, Twitter accounts

Source: The Federal Government has been monitoring the social media accounts of Nigerians who are suspected of having links with various terrorist groups, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq.

Our correspondent learnt that through covert operations, which have been going on for a while, security agencies hack into the Facebook and Twitter accounts of those they are monitoring.

The move, it was learnt, was meant to frustrate terrorist attacks on the country.

The project, which is costing the country millions of dollars, is being managed by the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Calabar Houseboy injures spinal cord peeping at his madam bathing

A 26-year-old domestic worker, Ubong Etu Nbomang, has injured his spinal cord while peeping at his female boss while she was having her bath.

He has been hospitalised at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Delta State, after falling and breaking his spine.

According to Punch, his boss is a top federal civil servant in one of the neighbouring states. The houseboy was alleged to have made holes around the bathroom door, through which he peeped at his boss whenever she was having a shower.

Our correspondent learnt that Nbomang had climbed on a platform to have a vantage view of his boss who is in her 30s.

Police arrest 34 villagers caught exhuming contraband frozen chicken worth over NGN35million

34 persons from neighbouring villages within the Kaduna metropolis were at the weekend arrested by the police for exhuming over 6000 cartons of contraband frozen chicken and other related poultry products worth over N35 million. 

According to the police, the arrested persons who came from Mando and Buruku villages exhumed the chicken barely 48 hours after Nigeria Customs, Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone B had destroyed, burnt and buried the contraband poultry products.

US jails Nigerian 22 years for helping Al-Qaeda

Punch: THE rising rate of young Nigerians’ involvement in global terrorism was again underscored by the sentencing of a 35-year-old Lawal Babafemi to 22 years’ imprisonment in the United States for aiding an affiliate of Al-Qaeda in Yemeni.

Babafemi, sentenced on Wednesday by a US District Judge, John Gleeson, in Brooklyn, was accused of receiving weapons training from Al-Qaeda and writing rap lyrics for the terrorist organisation.

He had pleaded guilty, in April 2014, to providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organisation, Al-Qaeda, in the Arabian Peninsula. He said he whipped up enthusiasm for the terror outfit in his native land and lobbyied Muslims to join its Yemeni branch.

He collected $9,000 from the late Al-Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki to recruit for Al-Qaeda on his behalf, prosecutors said.

Senate to probe power sector under Obasanjo, Jonathan

Punch: The Senate on Thursday set up a 13-member Ad-Hoc Committee to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the management of funds so far appropriated for the power sector since 1999.

The Committee, headed by Senator Abubakar Kyari, was also given the task of probing the unbundling of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria by the Federal Government.

The Upper Chamber took the decision while passing a motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, seeking the immediate reconnection of some parts of Borno State back to the national grid in view of the challenges the blackout was posing to his constituents.

The Senate urged the Federal Government to complete the Mambilla Power Project with the aim of improving electricity supply in the country.

Girl, 11, raped 'by her stepfather' gives birth to daughter despite mother's plea for abortion

An 11-year-old girl allegedly raped by her stepfather has given birth to a healthy daughter in Paraguay, it has been reported.

The youngster was found to be pregnant after arriving at hospital with her mum in May complaining of stomach pains.

On examination, a 21-week pregnancy was established.

The girl’s pregnancy was the result of having been raped by her stepfather, according to Amnesty International.

The girl's mother had wanted an abortion but Paraguay has some of the strictest abortion laws in the world.

She is also accused of having unlawful sex with two male minors and molesting two other boys.

Looters’ trial’ll begin in few weeks – President Buhari

THE Federal Government is set to begin the trial of persons alleged to have stolen from the national coffers, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Tuesday.

Buhari said the trial would begin “in a matter of weeks.”

The President spoke while addressing members of the National Peace Committee, led by a former military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“Those who have stolen the national wealth will be in court in a matter of weeks and Nigerians will know those who have short-changed them,” the President told his guests.

But the committee, which Buhari has transformed into the National Peace Council, also told the President to remember that Nigeria was no longer under military rule and that he should follow due process in the trial of suspected looters.

15-year-old loses eye after flogging by step mother

A 15-year-old boy, identified only as Bolu, has become partially blind after his step mother, Esther Modupe, allegedly flogged him in the Onipanu area of Lagos.

Bolu, who is to sit for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination of a university in Lagos State, could not see with his left eye.

It was learnt that the cane inadvertently hit the boy’s left eye during the flogging.

Our correspondent gathered that Bolu’s mother had separated from her husband, Lekan Williams, about 10 years ago, and her two children were brought up by the husband alone until three years ago when Lekan married a second wife ─ Esther.

It was learnt that Esther, who had yet to bear a child for Lekan, was the one taking care of the children before the flogging issue.
