Dear Coleen
Source: I’m 12 and I’ve heard my parents having sex five times, so I talked to them.
I stopped hearing them doing it and I was happy until my mum made a joke.
My dad was giving her a piggyback, so I said, “What are you doing?!” And she laughed, “Don’t worry, we’re not having sex”.
I also came home from school once and was looking for something in my dad’s drawer when I found condoms.
I then looked in their bin and there were two empty condom wrappers. Then, I found a pregnancy test with only one in it when the packet said it contained two!
What do I do? I’ve already written them an aggressive letter.
Coleen says
You’ve told them how you feel, but what’s hard to understand when you’re 12 is that adults make love and they’re allowed to.
They are also entitled to their own space and what’s in their drawers and bins is none of your business.
I agree, it’s not nice hearing your parents have sex (however old you are) and I understand you’re upset.
But on the positive side, it’s clear your mum and dad still love each other, still have fun and have a great relationship. In fact, it sounds like they’re mad about each other.
You sound like a switched-on 12-year-old, so I’m sure if you think about it, you’ll realise your parents haven’t done anything bad.
Yes, they were loud, but I’m sure they hadn’t realised. I’m certain they feel embarrassed, hence the joking.
Why not say, “I think it’s great you’re in love, I just don’t want to hear it”. Then stop thinking about it and get back to your own life.
