403,528 applied for teachers’ job in 36 hours – Presidency

The Presidency on Monday said 403,528 persons had so far successfully applied for jobs on the Federal Government’s newly-launched job portal since it opened for applicants on Sunday.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice-President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Monday.

Akande quoted the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation, Mr. Afolabi Imoukhede, as saying the government was impressed with the response.

EFCC seizes Diezani’s N3.58bn Abuja home

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has seized a mansion worth N3.58bn ($18m at the official exchange rate of N199 to a dollar) in the Asokoro area of Abuja allegedly belonging to the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, said this during an interview with Al-Jazeera, a Qatar-based news network.

Magu, in the interview, monitored by our correspondent on Monday, noted that the items in the house included jewellery, furniture and a bulletproof gym worth about $2m.

President Buhari may extend 10-day trip

An online medium, Sahara Reporters, on Monday evening reported that President Muhammadu Buhari might extend his  10-day trip to London, where he had gone to treat an ear infection.

According to the report, Buhari needs to undergo treatment for “a terrible cough that has persisted longer than the ear infection.”

The President had in the last few weeks cancelled official visits to Lagos and Rivers states, where he was represented by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

Skye Bank sacks 175 workers

The recent trend of retrenchment of workers in the financial services sector on Monday extended to Skye Bank Plc, which sent 175 of its employees into the labour market.

The bank confirmed the development in a statement through which it explained that the affected workers failed the year 2015 appraisal exercise.


The statement explained that a combination of factors was taken into consideration in the annual exercise, which ranged from low productivity to disciplinary issues, adding that the affected employees were duly exited in line with the bank’s staff exit policy.

Tragedy struck on Sunday as two postgraduate students of the University of Lagos drowned in the Elegushi Beach during the celebration of their friend’s birthday.

It was learnt that the deceased – Adesola Ogunmefun and Funmi Odusina – graduated from the Covenant University and were on the verge of bagging Master’s Degrees in International Law and Diplomacy from UNILAG.

Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, has alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari aborted his trip to the oil-rich Ogoni land in Rivers state, as a result of the assassination threat from the Niger Delta Avengers.

A militant had told one of the hosts of UK-based Radio Biafra that Buhari “should sign his death warrant” before his visit to Ogoni, and the president ended up delegating Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to the landmark flag-off of the clean-up of Ogoni.

Reacting, Fayose advised Nigerians to seek help elsewhere, because Buhari had “surrendered to the superior powers of the militants”.

Suspected hoodlums on Sunday abducted and killed a doctor with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Lagos, Thomas Adekoya-Cole, in the Itele area of Ijebu, Ogun State.

It was gathered that 60-year-old Adekoya-Cole, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with LUTH, was murdered while in his hometown to attend a public function.

 A man has slit the throat of his wife and mother of five in Oshodi,Lagos. The suspect, Sogei Jafairu, who hails from Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo state, was suspected to have committed the act for ritual purpose. 

He was said to have returned home Thursday evening, after spending one week outside. His unsuspecting wife, Roselyn , who was a trader at Ijora market, prepared food for members of the family . But the food was alleged to have been poisoned by her husband, who also ate with her. 

At about 1am, Jafaru was said to have been seen pacing around his one room and parlour apartment. He was said to have also been sighted licking some black substance suspected to be concoction to neutralise the poisoned food he ate with his wife.

Petrol prices rocket as drivers head off on holiday with the average cost leaping to £110 just in time for summer

Petrol prices have risen to their highest level in eight months, just as drivers head off for Bank Holiday and half-term breaks.

Many supermarkets were selling unleaded at just over £1 a litre as recently as March, but the price has leapt to £1.10 and is set rise further through the summer.

It is the first time the average price has been this high since September.

Prices are lower across Europe, with figures collated for the Post Office showing they range from 80p a litre for unleaded in Andorra to £1.05 in France.

She was said to have gone into labour on Thursday morning and taken to the Bayelsa State Government House Clinic where she was delivered of a baby girl.Since her return to Yenagoa,  she has been living at the Police Officers’ Mess in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

The Nigeria Police Force says it has arrested five suspects for their role in the Enugu attack by suspected herdsmen which led to the death of about 20 persons in the Ukpabi Nimbo area of the state on April 25, 2016.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole, said this in a statement on Wednesday.

She said, “The Nigeria Police Force in its renewed determination to rid the society of crimes and all forms of criminality, has arrested five of the suspects involved in the midnight raid on Nimbo community in the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State on April 25, 2016 as operatives of the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team based on credible technical intelligence swooped on them.Kolawole revealed that the police also recovered a phone from the herdsmen which had a video recording of the massacre.

Source: A 12-year-old girl, identified only as Favour, has been rescued by the police in the Mafoluku, Oshodi area of Lagos State, where her aunt and the husband allegedly took her to get rid of a pregnancy.

It was learnt that Favour had been allegedly raped several times by her aunt’s husband, identified as Johnbull Dike, before she conceived.

It was gathered that Dike’s wife and the nurse who was caught during the abortion had been arrested by the Akinpelu Police Division.It was learnt that while Favour was put in police’s care, a manhunt was launched for Johnbull, a tricycle rider, who fled the area after the police rescued the girl.

A two-year-old boy, Musa Murtala, is currently battling to live at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano.

Protesters block Lagos road as policewoman kills driver

Motorists and youths blocked the Igando end of the Lagos State University-Iyana Iba Road on Monday to protest against the alleged killing of a commercial driver, identified as Muyiwa Ijaduola, by a female police corporal attached to the Igando Police Division.

The protesters, who burnt tyres and planks at about 11am, blocked the road with three buses, demanding that the police should arrest the female corporal, identified only as Taiwo, and release Ijaduola’s corpse to his family members.

Our correspondent gathered that 46-year-old Ijaduola was stopped by Taiwo. It was learnt that on Sunday around 2.30pm, Taiwo and another female corporal were in front of a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation filling station in the Igando area, checking vehicles.

Ekiti State Governor, Fayose bans grazing in Ekiti.....

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has banned grazing and rearing of cattle in the state, saying those interested in cattle farming should get their own private cattle ranches.

The governor announced this when he visited Oke Ako in Ikole Local Government Area of the state where some residents of the town were attacked on Friday night by criminals suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

Fayose was accompanied by the state Commissioner of Police, Etop James; the Director of Department of State Services; and the state Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Don Ikemefuna.Two persons died from the attack while three others are receiving treatment in separate private hospitals in Ikole Ekiti and Ado Ekiti.

Now UK Christians are in a minority: Number of people who say they do not identify with any religion reaches almost half.

People who say they don’t identify with any religion now outnumber Christians as the country becomes less religious, a study has found.

Almost half the population of England and Wales said they had no religion – referred to as ‘nones’ – in 2014 study, almost double the figure of 25% recorded in the census just three years earlier.

People defining themselves as Christian, including Anglicans, Catholics and other denominations, made up 43.8% of the population – lower than the 48.8% of nones.

'Suicide by LION': Man strips naked and jumps into a Chilean zoo's enclosure in a bid to feed himself to a LION.

A man who stripped naked and entered a lion enclosure in a Chilean zoo has survived the incident, but the lions were killed.

Authorities in Santiago confirmed that the two African lions were put down as they severely mauled the 20-year-old man who had broken into their cage early on Saturday.

The man, who has been named by local media as Franco Luis Ferrada Roman, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and was said to be in grave condition.

Petrol price will crash in one month — Marketers

Oil marketers have given an indication that the pump price of petrol will crash in the next one month.

 Already, some filling stations belonging to independent marketers in major cities such as Abuja and Lagos are beginning to sell petrol below the N145 given last week by the Federal Government as the benchmark price per litre.

The Federal Government had penultimate Wednesday announced a new price regime of N145 as the maximum amount for a litre of petrol. This has prompted the Nigeria Labour Congress to declare a nationwide strike, demanding the return to the old prices of N86 and N86.50 per litre for fuel outlets controlled by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and major/independent marketers, respectively.
